HistoryIn 1894, young Frank Wheeler Slocomb pushed his way on horseback into the pine forested area west of Dothan where he established Slocomb Lumber Company and, with his brother Will, a naval store that produced sill, tar, rosin, turpentine, and pitch.Soon, the Central of Georgia Railroad Company extended their line from Albany, Georgia to Florala, Alabama establishing a rail line through Slocomb. The railroad created great excitement in the community and families began to move closer to the town center where they built a community house for the school and worship services in a square at the present-day intersection of Highway 103 North and Court Street. The square and the nearby railroad station were the social centers of the community. The earliest settlers of Slocomb worked hard to create this town and today this tight-knit community treasures that lineage and rich history. The lumber industry started by Frank Slocomb is still central to the Slocomb economy but the community is famous for the "Slocomb Tomato" and the agriculture remains a primary industry. The year 2001 marked the centennial of Slocomb, and called for a celebration of the town’s beginnings, the excitement of the present, and the anticipation of its future. ![]() In recognition and appreciation of our farmers, the City of Slocomb celebrates the tomato on the 3rd Saturday in June of every year with a "Tomato Festival" that includes the following activities:
