A Native Son of

• Born December 29, 1923 in Andalusia, Alabama at home 906 East Three Notch Street
• Married Polly L. Wilder on June 20,1947 at the First Baptist Church downtown and this year we have celebrated our 62nd anniversary
• Two children
  • Mary Evelyn - Married Maclin F. Smith III of Birmingham. Their children are Virginia Bentley, Maclin F. IV, and Yeates.Bentley married Bradford Sloan on Jan. 21, 2006. They are both graduates from the University of Alabama. They both work and attend school at night and on weekends in an effort to get their CPA tickets. Bentley is currently employed by one of the Accounting Firms in Birmingham Mac worked in sales with Tractor Equipment Company in Birmingham.However, because of the current economic situation, he has been terminated. He was out of work a couple of weeks before one of his previous customers at Tractor Equipment. One of the large construction companies in Bham has hired him. He is currently working at the Gulf Power Plant in Pensacola where his firm is constructing a new docking facility for coal laden barges. Yeates is working as a ski lift mechanic at Big Sky Resort in Montanta. He likes his work and is doing a good job for Big Sky. He enjoys playing golf on the Big Sky golf course and his game is improving.
  • George Sidney III - Married Jean Buckmaster and they have seven children; George IV, Luke, Libby, Marianna, Abigail, Sterling, and Shepherd. George IV is enrolled at UAB in Bio Engineering. Luke, Marianna and Libby were at Auburn during 2009. Luke was a Senior and graduated as a 2nd Lt. He will report to Columbus Miss in November for flight training. Marianna and Libby will be Seniors this Fall (2009).
• I Retired from Anderson's Peanuts in 1987. Since that time I have worked as a volunteer at the local Three Notch Museum. It is a local history museum and features several rail cars and items of interest to railroad buffs. There is an extensive collection of photographs and many other local history items. I also enjoy writing history of local interest. I have published several booklets on various local history items. My latest booklet is on "E.L.More's River Falls Power Company". It is a story of the construction of the two dams on the Conecuh River. It brought forth the first commercial quantity of electricty to 9 counties in South Alabama. Actually it was also the beginning of industrial development in the area. If interested the booklet sells for $8.00 plus $1.00 for postage.

I am a member of the Covington Historical Society and it's project The Three Notch Museum which is a local history museum for Andalusia and Covington County, Alabama.It also features several rail cars including two cabooses, a box car containing a model train layout. Mrs. Linda Castleberry has donated a Thomas The Tank railroad exhibit for the younger kids. It is an extensive layout and is a very attractive exhibit. A maintainence MotorCar is also on site. Also we have a log cabin that dates back to the late 1880's. The Clark Family donated the cabin. The River Falls Post office is also on site and it has been completely restored.

I served in World War II in the Panama Canal Zone for 27 months. I was sent for my basic training to Fort Benjamin Harrison near Indianapolis. There I was sent to Army Finance School where I learned how to make a payroll and pay officers and enlisted soldiers. On several return trips to Panama since the war, my wife and I have visited close friends who live there today. We have traveled with Jaime & Silvia Lasso to all provinces of Panama including the Darien province area and into Costa Rica. We would love to return to Panama to see all the recent development in an amazing Country. Now with the construction of the new and much larger locks, Panama is looking toward a bright future. Many people from Germany,Spain,Canada and the U.S.A. are retiring in Panama. Our friends, the Lassos, have a weekend place in the Coronado area and have told us recently, they now have a McDonalds in Coronado. Itis a small world indeed. The Lassos love to travel and do so at every opportunity. We had the pleasure of traveling with them on our trip to Russia some years ago. It was a memorable time for both of us.
