Rudder Road - Rudder road is
in South Montgomery County. To get there Exit I65 at exit 164 (U.S. 31) and go south app.
1.1 miles. Turn right onto Rudder Road which is a gravel road. As you travel down the road
you will see two ponds on your left and one on the right. These 3 ponds have attracted a
number of exciting birds.
You are likely to see herons and egrets throughout the year and during migration and late
summer extraordinary birds may turn up. Woodstorks, Roseate Spoonbills, and American
Avocet are the most unusual visitors. Spoonbills and Avocets are rare but in late summer
Woodstorks are likely. Other visiting shorebirds might include yellowlegs, snipe, and an
assortment of the small sandpipers. Wintering ducks should include Hooded Mergansers,
Gadwall, Ring-necked Duck, Wigeon, and Bufflehead. Migrating Black Terns may show up in
mid to late summer. Please restrict your birding to the road. Do not cross the fences.
East McLean Road - To reach East
McLean Road return to U.S. 31 and turn right. Travel about 1.5 miles and turn right. In
about a mile you will see a large pond on the right. This pond is some distance from the
road so a scope is necessary for viewing birds that are present. This pond usually has a
larger number of ducks in winter. The number of species is usually greater also. The
migrating shorebirds and other late summer visitors are usually about the same as those
seen on Rudder Road.
