Saturday October 27th 2007, 3.00 o’clock, we were in bed and the phone rang. Pedro (my husband) awoke and answer the phone. From our room I was hearing what happened, he was talking in English.... he told me “they are calling you”. What a big surprise, my Brantley Classmates were calling me. They haven’t forgotten the Spanish exchange student. I promise I will go to our next reunion and I will practice my English before going. It is not as bad as it looks by the phone......

August 1987, I arrived to Brantley; the Sullivan’s were waiting for me at Montgomery Airport. I was afraid and excited: far from home, a foreign language and a host family&ldots; I didn’t know if I will make it. What happens after a great year? I came back to Spain with a HOME, a FAMILY, and very special FRIENDS.

What am I doing now? I got married 6 years ago and moved to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Canary Islands). Pedro is a member of the JAG Spanish Corps and I work as CFO in Inverpesca Fish (Frozen Fish Company). We have one daughter Teresa, she is 2 years old, and she is attending a British School.

Please if anybody from Brantley comes to Spain do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you to the Sullivan family, the class of 88, my teachers and all the staff and alumni of BHS for their love and help that make the year I spent there special and wonderful. I part of my heart is in Brantley.

Sincerely,

Congratulations "Bulldogs" on your big win over Luverne. My class just celebrated our "50th" class reunion this past summer. What a joy it is to see former classmates. We feel blessed to be able to celebrate after this many years. What fun it is to tour the school and get that old feeling of being young once again. Just walking through the school halls brings back so many memories and as Martha Mount and Donnie Shackleford said (and yes, I remember you both) ..."there's no place like home" and Brantley High School is the epitome of the definition of "HOME". And if "Home is where the heart is", my heart is in Brantley. I have been married close to 50 years to my wife Pat...We have four children: Darrell a traveling nurse, Ted, deceased (leukemia), Susan, owner and directress of a local dance studio and Kyle the youngest who is currently serving for a Marine unit as a Corpsman in the Navy at Camp Pendleton, San Diego, CA. We have three grandsons, Aaron, Klein and Ben Riley. I have been retired for the past 7 years. I had a 42 year career at Scott/Kimberly Clark Paper Co. I was active in sports while at BHS and continued my love for sports with my sons and grandsons. I refereed youth and High School sports for 25 years. I feel blessed to have had such dedicated teachers at BHS. I was surprised to pick up our local paper and read an article captioned...The Front Porch Community, they were talking about none other than "Brantley, Alabama". Everything that was said in the article was so true, about how the small town was filled with pleasant southern people, always willing to give others a hand. My heart filled with pride as I continued to read and deepened my desire to be home again. Again, congratulations on a job well done Brantley

Hello BHS!!!

As we approach the one year anniversary of hurricane Katrina, I just wanted to take a moment and thank all of you at Brantley High School and the citizens of Brantley. If you offered up any prayers for the people of the Gulf Coast or New Orleans, I thank you. If you donated any monies to charities or gave your time to help in the clean-up effort or rebuilding effort, I thank you. It is my earnest prayer than none of you ever have to experience what we've been through. It's been NO picnic!

I'd like to share with you our evacuation story: The Sunday before Katrina struck; we evacuated to my Mom's apartment in Luverne (Meadowcrest Apartments). What would normally takes 4 hours turned into a 10 hour drive because of all the people leaving the Gulf Coast. We were fortunate to have family to stay with and we divided our time between my Mom and my sister (Frances Noble).

As the week wore on, news started to filter in that Slidell, Louisiana (our city) was underwater. My husband (Brian) and I feared the worst - - no home to go back to. Thank the Lord our fears were not realized! My brother Robert Nichols (he lives in Slidell also; came back to check on his house and mine) broke the news to us that we did have water damage and that we were one of the blest families in that our home was still standing. According to our neighbors (who stayed during the hurricane); the water came in (18 inches) on Monday afternoon and stayed for 14 hours - - - going down on Tuesday.

Before we left my Mom's we decided to pay our bills; procure the needed supplies to clean our property; and by gasoline for our autos and generator. As we started gathering our supplies; my family came to our rescue with cleaning supplies. Paul and Ruby (Grant) Nichols donated enough cleaning supplies that we are still using them a year later!!!!!

When we paid our bills, we needed a money order for one particular bill. We first tried the banks in Luverne; 'cause that was losest to where we were staying - - - but for some unknown reason; no one wanted to assist us. As we left the last bank in Luverne, I told my husband that we should try the bank in Brantley. I felt certain that someone working there would remember me. We were blest!!! Not only did Paula Beth (Mitchell) Hudson remember me; but the normal money order fee was waived.

As we shopped for our supplies; countless people who overheard our conversations, stopped us to tell us that they were going to pray for us and the people of the Gulf Coast. What a blessing to be surrounded by people who care about you and know you! The people of Brantley, Luverne (minus the banks), Troy and Greenville were extremely supportive, generous, and understanding!

To bring you up to date on where we are - one year later; we're currently living in our driveway in a 32 foot travel trailer given to us by my husband's brother. We're in the process of repairing our home by replacing sheetrock, flooring, cabinets, windows and doors. My husband estimates that our home will be livable again by Christmas.

We may have lost our household contents; but that's okay. It was just stuff. We were blest that none of our friends or other family members lost their lives.

Again, I thank you for your thoughts, prayers and assistance. May God richly bless you!

One last thing: GO 'DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone!

Picture this , it's 2:30 on a Friday afternoon in the Fall. We play Luverne tonight and the pep rally is just beginning! Can you feel the excitement? Can you smell the gym? Do you hear the shouts and yells of all the students? Just as well as the anticipation of the pep rally ending and everyone piling up at the Big/Little for chicken, tater logs, and making plans for the weekend. Do you remember Coach Jones and Mr. Masons classes? I think if I couldthank anyone for my success it would have to be the academic, as well as, the life teachings of Coach Jones and Mr. Mason. Although, if I cou! ld thank someone for my knowledge and GREAT love of sports it would have to be Mr. (Coach) Stallworth. I hated his P.E. class and couldn't understand why we had to take all those written tests in P.E., and now I greatly appreciate it!!!

Now that I I've remenisced about the most cherished time of my life, I'll get to my present life. I am a marketing agent for a company the promotes youth Christian concerts in the Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg area. I have 2 kids, a girl 12 and a boy 11. I am divorced and living a very productive happy life. I truly believe if I'd grown up any other place, any other time, it would not have been the same joy and pride as I have for Brantley the town as well as Brantley High School. When I think of Brantley High School, I think of excellant education, outstanding sports program, and no other place I would rather call HOME!! I wou! ld really love to hear from anyone who remembers me, even if you don't, it would be a great pleasure to hear other comments and memories of this great school and town we've all known and love.

My e-mail address is Bamabrat2719@yahoo.com

Last but not least, two words of advice:

  1. Never give up on your dreams.

  2. Always cherish your youth.

Hi,

My name is Jessica (Bryant) Smith. I am currently living in Sevierville, TN with my wonderful husband of 10 years, Ray, and our 3 beautiful children, Ray, Jr. age 10, Abby, age 6, and last but certainly not least is Alex age 5. I was a member of Brantley High School until 1994. My experience at BHS was wonderful. I had a great time in school. I wasn't very popular with the IN crowd, but I enjoyed it just the same.

I have made a great life for myself and my family. I am a decorating consultant for a local Interior Decorator. I decorate local rental cabins and make floral arrangements for them as well, along with 10 million other things too.

Both of my boys are playing football. My oldest, Ray, Jr., is the best lineman in the Pee Wee Football league in this area. He is great. Wonderful athlete, terrific student, and spectacular son. I couldn't be more proud.

Abby is my challenge. She is 6 years old and she is the princess of our castle. Beautiful, smart, and funny, but very high maintainance.

Alex is my sweetheart. He is 5 and so lovable. He smiles all the time and has the biggest brown eyes you could ever imagine. He can make you melt at times with his charm.

There is never a dull moment in my life....but I wouldn't have it any other way!!!

Well if anyone remembers me or wants to get in touch just email me. jsmith052277@yahoo.com

Take Care BHS!!!

What a nice letter from Donnie Shackleford! I, too, remember the “good old days” at Brantley High School! And I am proud to be an alumni of BHS. Maybe some of you can still remember the late ‘50s with malts from Foster Drugs or a hamburger after the big game at Tompkins Grill. Yes, those were the “good old days”.

Working to raise a family has been a challenge, but one that I have met and conquered because of the education received from Brantley High School. Truly, I can say that I was prepared for most situations career wise. I had some college, but was the only one of my Mount siblings not to finish college. This is something I hope to do after I retire from my career in real estate.

Always my heart swells with pride, when I have a home listed to sell in Brantley. I am a Realtor in Covington County and we work Brantley as well. What a quaint, neat, friendly Victorian community from which I grew up. The homes are graciously loved and cared for just as I was as a child. The school still has the quality education I was afforded. This education provided me with the means to be the sole provider for three children and their needs both physically, financially and emotionally.

I wish that I could see more of my classmates and have the opportunity to thank them as well as my former teachers for their contribution to my becoming who I am today. My classmates and I were close. There were only 19 to graduate! Each of them have been successful too. I hope to hear from them. My email address is MarthaDuggan@alaweb.com, and telephone number is 1(888)244-3759.

Along this path of life, if you were on that path, I wish to thank you for being part of my life. I think that we are part of all that we have met.

Sincerely,

Martha (Mount) Duggan

It would really be great if more would take advantage of this site to stay in contact. A day doesn't go by that I don't have thoughts of some of those I knew when I was young and wonder what became of them. And I would hope that there are those out there who also wonder what became of the Shackleford twins. Life may not have been the greatest growing up in Brantley but it was unforgettable and even though some bad memories exist they are far outweighed by the good.

I now live in Boynton Beach, FL (near Boca Raton) and own and operate an Aviation business. We operate and provide Private Jet Charters. S/A Aviation Services, Inc., Certificate holder, Reliance Aviation, Inc., Ft Lauderdale, FL.(http://www.reliance-aviation.com/air-charters.asp). The business keeps me very busy and I hardly ever stay at home. I have seen my wife once in the past month. At the moment I am emailing from New York after a week in Manzanillo, MX, hopefully I will be at my house in Florida by Thursday. I say "my house" because I still think of Brantley as my home. I hope someday soon I will get to come "home". I would really like to retire there one day.

Once again, thanks and if you could please update the email, it would be greatly appreciated. If you ever have the need for some private charters, please call; 561-346-444.
