The Brantley Bulldogs had not lost a home game since November 15, 2002, a remarkable 37 wins in a row; but, all good things must come to an end, and it did. Highland Home Flying Squadron, piloted by sensation Deymond Sankey, ended the streak by defeating the Bulldogs at Brantley Friday night by a 30-21 score.

It looked as if the Bulldogs might take control of the game early when they built a 13-0 lead. But, Highland fought back to take a 14-13 half-time lead, and they held on in the second half for their 4th win of the year against only one lost.

The battle got started when Derrick Holley scored Brantley's first score on a 5 yard run with 2:18 left in the first period. Britt Barnes kicked the point to make the score 7-0. Then, after recovering a Highland fumble, Brantley's Anthony Gulley raced 47 yards to add another touchdown for the Bulldogs with only 4 seconds left in the first quarter. The point after failed and the score was 13-0 Brantley.

At this point, the Squadron started their comeback when Sankey reached back and threw a 40 yard strike to wide receiver Anthony Merriweather for their first touchdown of the night. Kyle Tucker kicked the extra point to cut Brantley's lead to 13-7.

The blue clad eleven from the north end of Crenshaw County were not through in the first half as they drove the length of the field with the clock running out. After timely pass plays from Sankey to Merriweather and Darius Chambers, Sankey ran it in from the one yard line with Tucker adding the point. Highland 14-13 at the half.

The second half saw Highland taking the opening kick-off and marching for their 3rd touchdown when Sankey again carried it over the goal line from 4 yards out with 7:16 left in the 3rd period. Tucker made it 21-13.

Brantley came back fighting to get back in the game when Gulley found Roy-L Knighten in the endzone on a 3 yard touchdown pass. Stephen Walker passed to Dexter Daniels for the two point conversion and it was tied at 21 with 2:23 seconds to go in the third.

Highland's next score came when the Bulldogs held on defense deep in their own territory; so Tucker came on and kicked a 26 yard field goal for a 24-21 Squadron lead.

Brantley could not mount another scoring threat, but with 2:08 left in the game, Sankey put the victory on ice for the Squadron when he hit Kylen Grace on a 26 yard touchdown pass. The point after made the final score 30-21.

Brantley, 4-1, plays host to an undefeated McKenzie Tigers, 5-0, next Friday night at Bulldog Stadium with a 7:00 pm kickoff.
