November 17, 2006:

The Brantley Bulldogs rode a bunch of wild Stallions from South Lamar High School in Millport, Alabama to a 33-14 victory Friday night in Bulldog Stadium to advance to round three of the Alabama High Athletic Association Class 1A State Football Playoffs. The Bulldogs won their 12th consecutive game of the 2006 season without a loss, and next week they will travel to Maplesville to take on the undefeated Red Devils in what will be one of the most challenging third round games in memory for the Bulldogs.

Brantley took the opening kickoff across midfield by Roy-L Knighten, and 10 plays later, Jeffrey Daniels bulled his way into the endzone from the one yard line. Marquis Owens kicked the PAT for a 7-0 Brantley lead. The Bulldogs were able to harness the first few Stallions' offensive efforts with a swarming defense led by Marquis Owens, Corley Lathan, and Jeffrey Daniels. Midway the second period Brantley scored again when James Pittman took the pitch and raced 10 yards for a touchdown. Owens kicked the point after for a 14-0 lead. Then with only 43 seconds on the clock, Daniels had his second one yard score of the game following a time consuming drive by the Bulldogs that highlighted a mixture of passing and running plays. The point after failed and Brantley had a 20-0 lead despite numerous penalties and 2 turnovers.

The second half of play started off like a carbon copy of the first with the Bulldogs holding South Lamar to three plays and punt. Brantley drove inside the ten only to fumble away the ball once again, but on the Bulldogs next possession, Jonathan Helms hit James Pittman on a screen pass and the play of the game began. Pittman took the pass broke one tackle, crossed the field with some nifty running, and then he picked up a bone crushing block from Chris Booker that broke him wide open for a 65 yard scoring pass play. Owens added the point, and the score was 27-0 with 3:13 left in the third period.

South Lamar responded with a drive than ended on the first play of the fourth period on a 19 yard pass play to make the score 27-7. Brantley followed with another scoring drive that was capped off by the third one yard run touchdown run by Daniels with 7:11 on the clock in the final period of play. The point after was blocked making the score 33-7. The Stallions fought back and scored the final points of the game on a 4 yard run with 5:28 left to play to make the final score 33-14.

The Bulldogs played tough physical football throughout the game, but they were plagued by penalties and turnovers. They won't have the luxury of making those kind of mistakes and still beating what may be the best team in Class 1A next week, the Maplesville Red Devils. The Red Devils won 33-8 over a good A. L. Johnson team. Brantley will have to travel to Maplesville for the Friday night battle set for 7:00 pm.
