Bulldogs give "thumbs up" after 5th consecutive win over Luverne, 36-0

November 2, 2006: The perfect 10-0 Brantley Bulldogs put an exclamation mark to their undefeated season record with a 36-0 win over their biggest rivalry the Luverne Tigers. The Tigers of Luverne came to Brantley for the Thursday night battle with an unblemished record of 9-0 just like the Bulldogs, but they left headed north with their record tarnished by the ferocious green coated dawgs!

The rival verbal jabs collected for a year from the followers of each team, the anticipated "no loss" game by each outstanding team, the fever-pitched atmosphere of the spectators at the game, and the enormous crowd of rapid football fans waiting to see the game of all games made for an evening of football at the highest pitch! No bigger game had ever been played at Bulldog Stadium not even the 1993 1A Championship Game won by the Bulldogs over West Jefferson by a (yes the score is correct) 36-0! Was this 36-0 score to be an omen for the Bulldogs? It must have as the Bulldogs were in total control.

Brantley scored on their second possession of the game though the offense never left the field from their first possession. Luverne intercepted a Brantley pass from Jonathan Helms in the endzone, and when the Tigers defender, Navarius Cole, ran it out, he was hit by Terry McClain and fumbled on the seven yard line. McClain did an excellent job of recovering the loose pigskin to put the Bulldogs in great shape. James Pittman quickly put it over the goal line to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead midway the first period. Then in the second quarter with time running out, the Dogs caught the Tigers "cat-napping". Senior Jeffrey Daniels took the pitch and started around right end in what appeared to be a run when he suddenly pulled up and hit receiver Thad Frazier, who was 15 yards past anyone, for a 57 yard touchdown pass. Anthony Gulley ran the two point conversion to give Brantley a 14-0 lead.

In the second half it was all green! Brantley scored 22 unanswered points as Gulley ran for an eight yard score in the third, Pittman raced in from 23 yards out on his second TD of the night, and Chris Booker had a 14 yard scoring run to give the "Dawgs" a sweet 36-0 win. Booker had 140 yards and Pittman added 60 yards rushing. Gulley made some key runs during the game. The offensive line made up of Wesley Hall, Chase Haws, Corey Morgan, Westley Spivey, Austin Brook, Dexter Daniels, and Jared Hall were outstanding as they controlled the line of scrimmage all night.

The defense for the Class 1A number 1 ranked Bulldogs recorded their sixth shutout of the season. The strong defensive showing was led by Jeffrey Daniels, Dexter Daniels, Rick Wiley, and Corey Latham. Terry McClain, Roy-L Knighten, Jon Tyson, Justin Wright, Landon Morgan, Chase Haws, Terrell Burnett, Thad Frazier, and Stephen Walker were outstanding in their defensive efforts also.

For the Bulldogs they picked up their 44th regular season win out of their last 45 regular season games. Coach David Lowery completed an amazing 4th season with a perfect 10-0 regular season record! A perfect 10-0 season is a rare milestone for any coach, but to have four out of the last eight seasons is simply amazing! Congratulations to the Coach Lowery and his staff of Ashley Kilcrease, Andrew Kilcrease, Kris Odom, Todd Johnson, Greg Evans, and Stan Haws for another great year! But with that said, now the important part begins, the run for a Class 1A State Championship!

First round of play begins in Brantley Thursday night on November 9th as Verbena comes to Bulldog Stadium for a 7:00 pm kickoff.
