Brantley captures Region 2 Championship with 45-16 win over Florala

October 20, 2006; The Brantley Bulldogs captured the Region 2 championship with a 45-16 win over the Wildcats of Florala in Brantley Friday night. The win improved the Bulldogs' record to 8-0, and the victory was the 34th consecutive Region 2 win for the Dawgs. The game was a milestone for head Coach David Lowery as it was his 100th game at Brantley counting regular season and playoff games. He has an impressive 83-17 overall record, 83% winning percentage, with a 68-10 regular season record and a 15-7 playoff record. The Bulldogs, under Coach Lowery's reign, have won 42 of their last 43 regular season games. Brantley was paced by Chris Booker with 3 touchdowns and James Pittman with 2 touchdowns. Pittman scored the Dawgs first score on a 9 yard run with 9:39 left in the 1st quarter, and Booker stepped up the pace with a 18 yard scamper for a touchdown at 1:50 on the clock still in the first quarter. However, the Wildcats were not going to lay down and quit. Roe Williams, the Wildcats' quarterback, sped around right end and raced 75 yards for a Florala touchdown. The point after made the score temporarily 14-8. Florala then kicked off , and Anthony Gulley, behind outstanding blocking, took the kick and promptly returned it 70 yards and Brantley's third touchdown of the game. Three touchdowns were scored in the final 1:50 of the first quarter. In the second period of play, Pittman got his second TD of the night on 17 yard run making the score 26-8. After holding the Wildcats on a fourth down attempt, Brantley's quarterback Jonathan Helms found Thad Frazier opened for a 56 yard touchdown strike. Then with only 4.7 seconds left in the first half, Booker once again broke loose for a 66 yard touchdown run to build the lead to 39-8 as the half ended. In the third quarter, Booker had his third touchdown of the night on a 20 yard run. The final score of the game came when Florala picked up a Brantley fumble and sped 90 yards for a touchdown. The final score was Brantley 45 Florala 16. Chris Booker had 217 yards on 10 carries, and James Pittman added 109 yards on 8 carries. Defensively, Dexter Daniels, Jeffrey Daniels, Corley Lathan, and Steven Walker paced the Bulldogs. Brantley travels to Kinston next Friday night with a 7:00 pm kickoff. |
