AlaWeb Installs Generator At Network Operations Center

Engineers have just completed the installation of a large natural gas powered generator at our Network Operations Center in Andalusia, AL. Frequent power outages are now a thing of the past! Prior to this installation, if we had a lenghty power outage at our NOC, AlaWeb customers in the entire wiregrass could not log on to our service. We have always maintained UPS's that would carry our servers for a short period, but when the battery backups were exhausted our service would go down until power was restored. Now, with the new generator, the switchover from electrical power to the gas generator power is instantaneous with no interuption in our service!

AlaWeb Expands Network Operations Center

Recently, AlaWeb acquired the building which adjoins our existing Network Operations Center and by doing so has doubled the capacity of our Server Room, Support Department, and Billing Center. We have already moved our Server Room and our Billing Center to the larger facility. Our Support Department will also be relocated soon. This expansion clears the way for future growth and has amazingly occurred with no noticeable down time to our customers!

AlaWeb Employs Full-Time Chat Monitor

For those that enjoy chatting in our AlaChat areas, you have probably already noticed that there are now Chat Monitors in the Chat Forums who monitor conversations, behavior, etc. of the chatters. We have recently taken a stronger stand on this issue. Parents can feel relatively comfortable when their children use this service that our Monitors do not tolerate abuse of our chat policies by other chatters. Our Chat is used for many purposes, some of which include area students seeking homework assignments from fellow students at such times when they are absent from school, family members visiting with relatives far away, and for simply meeting others on the Internet. We are very proud of the recent employment of our full-time Monitor and of the efforts of the many volunteer Monitors. We appreciate the benefits of having mature, full-time Monitors in the Chat. We also appreciate all the feedback you have given us on this issue!

AlaWeb One Of Few ISP's To Operate Virus-Free Email Server

First released in June of 1999, AlaWeb's Virus-Scanning Firewall has been a complete success. We have already captured and deleted thousands of viruses which were transmitted via email to our email server, thus preventing them from reaching our customer's computers. We are still one of the few ISP's to offer this free service to it's customers. You can feel relatively safe, if you are an AlaWeb customer, that you will not be troubled with an email transmitted virus. Also, for constant protection against newly released viruses, our email server automatically updates itself daily with the latest virus-protection pattern files. Typically, by the time our customers learn of a new virus that has been introduced, we are already protecting them from it!

AlaWeb Meets With GTE On Bringing DSL To The Wiregrass

AlaWeb's connection options are directly related to what type of circuits GTE (now Verizon) offers in our area. A few short years ago, when GTE informed us their lines were compatible with the new 56k V90 modem standard, we went to work upgrading our equipment & circuits in order to offer this fast service to our customers. We were fully compatible with the 56k V90 technology by July, 1998. It has been a huge success.

Now, with the explosive appeal of the Internet and it's everyday uses which we've all learned to depend on, some of our customers have requested even more speed than what the 56k V90 technology can offer. We have met with Verizon, expressing our customer's needs. A few weeks ago, Verizon informed us they will begin offering DSL (Digital Subscriber Lines) to their area phone customers as soon as Fall, 2000. DSL technology can typically be served to phone customers who reside within a 3 mile radius of their local "DSL compatible" phone switch. In turn, AlaWeb has now positioned itself as the first ISP in the Wiregrass that will offer support for both 56k V90 and the new super-fast DSL technology once available. Our Network Operations Center has just completed the upgrades required to support this new technology. Once available, DSL will offer faster productivity at a reasonable price. We will update you on DSL availabilty in your area as soon as Verizon provides us with their DSL schedule for the Wiregrass!

Thank You!
