Do you really need a GTE Calling Plan to access AlaWeb?

There appears to be an overwhelming misconception among many of our customers that you are required to purchase a GTE Calling Plan to access our service to achieve a local, flat-rate, unmeasured call.

Depending on your location, this may not be the case. AlaWeb's network is designed with POP sites (points of presence) placed at key locations throughout South Alabama. You may be located in a home calling territory to one of our POP site locations, thus eliminating the need for a GTE Calling Plan to access our service. In this case, when you place a call to a phone number within your home calling territory, it is considered a local, flat-rate, unmeasured call. And, since GTE's Calling Plans are optional, your decision to purchase one should be based on your individual tendency to place calls to numbers outside of your home calling territory.

To confirm whether or not you're located in a home calling territory to one of our POP sites, please use our new POP Locator tool. This tool will compare the phone number you enter to AlaWeb's Service Area, and then to GTE's Local Service Flat-Rate Exchange Areas. The resulting information will advise you as to which POP site you should be dialing and whether or not a special calling plan is required to achieve a local, flat-rate, unmeasured call.

If you find that you do need a GTE Calling Plan to access our service, please be sure to see the latest news on the recent GTE billing problems associated with those plans.
