AlaWeb Installs new Virus-Scanning Firewall

Due to the growing number of computer viruses introduced over the Internet, AlaWeb has installed an advanced InterScan Firewall System on our Intergraph Servers that is designed to prevent viruses from being transmitted to AlaWeb customers via email. This new service is free of charge to our customers and was activated Sunday evening, March 28th, 1999.

Each inbound and outbound email is scanned for viruses by our firewall. When a virus is detected, our firewall deletes the virus, then emails the sender and the intended recipient with a notice of the attempt to transmit (intentional or not) a virus through our email server.

Since the InterScan Firewall is constantly updating itself, it is designed to offer up-to-date protection from viruses as they are introduced, like "The Melissa Virus" and the "Worm.Explore.Zip" virus which was introduced over the past few days.

Since AlaWeb cannot guarantee, nor take the responsibility for, virus protection on your system and since email is not the only method by which you can come in contact with a computer virus, it is still very important that you maintain an up-to-date virus scanning software, such as McAfee's VirusScan or Norton's AntiVirus.

Internet Providers throughout the world are in the process of adding this type of protection to their email servers in an attempt to prevent their customers from receiving or transmitting email viruses.

Due to AlaWeb's association with Intergraph Computer Systems of Huntsville, Al., we are proud to be one of the first ISP's in the area to offer this type of protection to our customers.

Thank you,
